Coronavirus (COVID-19) and Sports

People watch sports to get away from real life, but now real life has impacted that realm.Over the last few weeks, the coronavirus pandemic has hit all countries and spread across the globe, forcing massive change over peoples lifestyles and daily lives. The Covid19 outbreak has forced major sports leagues such as the NBA, NHL, MLS, and sport leagues around the world to suspend their seasons, due to the rapid spread of the virus. The March Madness NCAA tournament was cancelled, resulting in the biggest sporting event in match being shut down. Veteran and upset minded college basketball teams are unable to participate in the big dance. The NBA and NHL must make a choice, whether to cancel the regular season and proceed with playoffs. MLS soccer is in the best position, having only recently started its season. Soccer leagues across Europe, as well as the prestigious UEFA tournaments are suspended.

Such measures help contain the virus, slow down the spread, and helps keep people safe. Mass gatherings of people can risk harming those in high risk groups such as the elderly or those with health problems. Sadly, this comes as a price, as millions are without entertainment to pass the time, as well as revenue loss for the teams, and thousands of arena workers not being paid.

For how long the leagues have to be closed down remains to be seen. Most leagues postponed under the assumption that a 30-day rule was in affect, but if the virus does not slow down, seasons could be cancelled all together. A early or late June date is the most optimistic assumption. As for now, millions of athletes are advised to stay home and practice social distancing along with the general public.
